President Trump’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr. on Wednesday appeared to leave the door open to a future presidential bid.
Trump Jr. was asked during the Qatar Economic Forum if he would consider picking up the reins and run for office after President Trump stepped down.
“Here we go. Well,” Trump Jr. replied with a chuckle.
Some in the audience started to clap, to which Trump Jr. continued, “Oh — oh boy.”
He noted that it was “an honor to be asked, and an honor to see that some people are okay with it,” before adding that “the answer is, I don’t know. Maybe one day. You know, that calling is there.”
Trump Jr. said that his father had “truly changed” the GOP and expressed optimism about a second Trump administration.
“These next three and a half years is the greatest opportunity to reset America, to reset relations around the world, to create prosperity and growth for everyone, and I’m all here for it,” he said.
Pressed again by the moderator at the forum if his answer to potentially running for office after his father was “maybe,” Trump Jr. replied, “Maybe, you never know.”
While Vice President Vance has been seen in some ways as the heir apparent to Trump, Trump Jr.’s remarks underscore how the 2028 GOP primary will be anything but certain. Other Republicans who could throw their hat in the ring include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R), among others.
The Democratic primary is expected to be just as contested, if not more, with a handful of Democratic governors in addition to several senators who are seen as major contenders for the Democratic nod.
